Castletroy cause upset in first round of Junior Cup as they defeat PBC in Cork

A huge upset in the Munster Schools Junior Cup yesterday as Castletroy College toppled 29 time winners PBC in the first round in Muskerry RFC.

Castletroy didn’t get off to the best start as Darragh French got over for an early score which he converted following a ruck deep into the away side’s 22.

The Limerick side kept their cool however and Jack Oliver knocked over two quickfire penalties midway through the first half to shorten the deficit to only a point.

Oliver then put his side into the lead just before half time with a well struck penalty on the 22 to. 9-7 at the break.

Shortly after the restart, the impressive Oliver made it four from four with the boot, and doing so increased the travelling side’s lead to five points.

Things got even better for Castletroy as Conor O’Shea intercepted inside the PBC 22 and barged his way over in the corner. Oliver lined up the kick and slotted it from a tough angle to increase their lead to 12 points.

Pres didn’t give up however and replied with tries from French and Daniel Hurley, in the last play, but French couldn’t knock over the resulting conversion which meant a quarter final spot for Castletroy and a loss for PBC.

Presentation go into the next round knowing only a win will secure a quarter final spot.
