Limerick FC suffer defeat at the hands of former champions Cork City

Cork City were 3-0 victors over Munster rivals Limerick FC at Turners Cross on Friday night. Goals from Jimmy Keohane, Kieran Sadlier and Aaron Barry handed all three points to John Caulfield’s side.

The result means little to either side as Limerick will be contesting a two legged promotion/relegation playoff against either Finn Harps or Drogheda United. Dundalk were crowned SSE Airtricity League Premier Division champions last week so the Leesiders will have one eye on the FAI Cup final against their arch rivals next month.

The visitors were behind inside two minutes as former Derry City midfielder Barry McNamee set up Jimmy Keohane to smash the ball past Tommy Holland. Limerick did have chances through Barry Maguire and Billy Dennehy before Danny Morrissey forced a great save from Peter Cherrie.

At the beginning of the second half, Kieran Sadlier was picked out at the back post by Keohane before rounding Holland and slotting the ball into the empty net. As the full time whistle neared, center-back Aaron Barry headed a Sadlier corner home to ensure an easy victory for the league runners up.

Limerick will face St. Patrick’s Athletic at the Markets Field next Friday in what will be the club’s last home game of the regular league season. However, Tommy Barrett will be keeping a keen eye on proceedings between Finn Harps and Drogheda at Finn Park. The sides are deadlocked at 1-1 after the game at United Park last night.
