With 16 Senior Cup titles between them and a plethora of international players produced by both schools, Crescent College Comprehensive and St Munchins will go head to head on Friday night at the Markets Field at 6:30pm.
The sides will contest for a cup named in honour of the late Dudley Herbert, of Crescent College Comprehensive and the late Sean Conneally, of St Munchin’s College.
Crescent head coach Matt Browne is looking forward to the game:
“I am absolutely looking forward to it, the fact that it is a competitive fixture against someone we could possibly meet in the cup, it gives us a good marker of where we are at. It’s a neutral venue at a nice stadium in the city plus the fact that it is for charity which is massive really.”
Both sides will begin their Munster Senior Cup campaigns in the second week of January with Crescent facing St Clements while St Munchins will face Bandon in their opening game.
St Munchins head coach Dave Quinlan says that the game will be the latest edition of a healthy rivalry between the two schools and is hoping his side can be the firs to put their name on the cup.
“The way the school year goes with various things, it’s very hard to get your first XV out for a game, your cup XV so you kind of target fixtures. I know we’ve definitely looked at this fixture as a real proper warm up for the cup.
“As a stand alone fixture, it’s the first year and there is trophy there. Going back many years, Crescent College and St Munchins were always rivals. We’d like to put our name on the trophy first.”
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Midwest Simon Community and the Peter McVerry Trust and it is hoped that pupils past and present will get behind the event for such a good cause.
