LISTEN: John Tuohy to use National League to build for Championship

Limerick begin their Littlewoods Ireland National League campaign against Dublin in Rathkeale on Sunday with a 2pm throw in.

Limerick have performed well in the last three League campaigns, reaching the Semi-Finals on each occasion but have yet to make the breakthrough to reach a Final at any of those attempts.

Manager John Tuohy says they are going to use the league to build for a the championship.

“We are going to take it our stride. It’s going to be a very long season but ultimately we are preparing for championship at the end of the day.”

Limerick’s 2017 championship campaign was to eventually prove disappointing with just a single win over Tipperary as they failed to make it out of their group. but it was an opening round heavy loss to Offaly that put Limerick under pressure and did irreparable damage to their scoring difference.

John Tuohy says the approach to the league this year is to be better equipped to progress further in the championship.

“The last few years have been about getting experience, making it to national league semi finals, doing well in Munster –  we got to a Munster final and got beaten in extra time and then getting to a final and beating Cork and that was a great achievement for our players.”

“Getting success at senior level is very important in bedding ourselves down. Now in my 3rd year with these girls, it is important that we do well in championship.”

Still relative newcomers to Senior level since promotion in 2015, Limerick will be hoping to continue to use the League as a key step in their progression at this level.
