LISTEN: Billy Lee “these lads have character, we kept trying to tack on scores”

Limerick Senior Football Manager Billy Lee spoke to the media in the aftermath of his side’s 5-19 to 3-07 loss at the hands of Mayo in the All Ireland Qualifiers at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday evening.

Lee felt a flurry of Mayo goals in the second half put a better gloss on the scoreline that it might otherwise have been.

“I just felt that the three goals towards the end put a better gloss on it from their point of view. We know they are better that us but I don’t think they were that much better that us.”

Despite the final scoreline, Limerick did a decent job of containing Mayo for periods of the game.

“We kept trying to tack on scores like we did against Clare, I think I looked at the scoreboard at around 57 or 58 minutes and I’ve a memory of 1-16 to 2-6.

“We set out stall to try and build on the Clare game. No disrespect to Clare and who are we to be judging teams ahead of us but Mayo would be seen to be at a higher level and we were – within reason –  to stick with them and be competitive for fifty odd minutes plus so that’s an upward curve for us.”
