Niamh Mulcahy rescues for Limerick with late point against Clare

Niamh Mulcahy rescued a point for Limerick in their Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship Group 1 tie as she kept her nerve to slot a 57th minute free to grab an 0-8 to 0-8 draw.

Pressure was mounting on both sides following opening round defeats and while a defeat would have been disastrous for either side, Limerick will be the happier of the two sides having come from back from 3 down and the break and again from 2 down in the latter stages.

Clare started the better of the two sides and built up a solid 0-7 to 0-4 point lead heading to the break. Mulcahy opened proceedings with a point for Declan Nash’s side but that was quickly cancelled out by Niamh O’Dea.

Two Chloe Morey points nudged Clare into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead. Two Mulcahy points book ended a Doireann Murphy point (Clare) before Sarah Carey levelled it up at 0-4 apiece on 22 minutes.

Clare’s Orlaith Duggan and Morey (2) added further points as the Banner enjoyed a good run of scores before to break to hold a deserved 3 point lead at the interval.

Whatever Declan Nash said to his charges at half time, it seemed to have worked as points from Caoimhe Costelleo and Mulcahy cut the lead to just a point. Momentum had swung towards Limerick now but Clare’s only second half point came via Morey to push the gap back out to two once more.

It looked to have been enough to earn Clare the win but they Ahane clubwoman Mulcahy was unerring with two late frees to secure a deserved and vital point.
