LISTEN: Limerick SFC Wrap Up with Matt O’Callaghan

With two rounds of the Limerick Senior Football Championship played, The Weekly Observer’s Matt O’Callaghan, spoke with Sporting Limerick to give his thoughts on the first two rounds of action.

In group 1, Monaleen have made a highly impressive start to the defence of their title. With two wins from two they are looking like advancing straight to the semi finals for the second year running. Drom Broadford lie in second with 3 points after a win and a draw. Fr Caseys, Adare and Rathkeale have a point each while Na Piarsaigh are yet to get on the board. However, Adare and Na Piarsaigh have only played one game with their match re fixed for the 20th of May.

Speaking about the reigning champions, O’Callaghan feels that Drom Broadford are the only team that may prevent them from finishing top,

“Certainly, again looking through it (Group 1), apart from Drom-Broadford, who is going to stop Monaleen topping the group and going straight throught to the semi-final? I think it’s very difficult to see anyone doing it”

In relation to group 2, there is no looking past Newcastle West so far. They have racked up an incredible 9-26 in their two games thus far, compelling victories over Ballylanders and St Patricks. Indeed four of the five other sides have picked up a solitary victory with St Kierans, Oola, Ballylanders, and St Pats all on 2 points. Ballysteen make up the rest of the group with two narrow losses so far.

Discussing the 2015 Champions NCW, O’Callaghan doesn’t imagine any side catching Newcastle, although he is looking forward to the derby clash with St Kierans,

“It’s very very hard to see, who is going to stop them in Group 2 for starters.. Always there is a dynamic between themselves and St Kierans, that local derby”

O’Callaghan finished off by saying that Monaleen and Newcastle West are looking like potential champions after the first two rounds, yet there is a lot of football to be played between here and then.

“We may well be looking at Monaleen v Newcastle West in the County Final…The Fr Casey Cup isn’t given out until October, an awful lot can happen between this and then”
