McCarthy out of action after suffering cruciate ligament injury

Limerick senior hurler Richie McCarthy will need surgery after the county board confirmed that he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament last week.

McCarthy picked up the injury playing for his club Blackrock in their 1-18 to 1-18 draw with Pallasgreen in the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship.

The All-Star from 2013 was part of Limerick’s squad that earned the county’s first All-Ireland senior hurling title in 45 years last month. McCarthy played the final half hour of the game after coming on for Mike Casey.

McCarthy has been a member of the Limerick panel since 2009 and was a key part of the team during 2013’s Munster Championship victory.

A county board statement read: “Following a scan this week we can confirm that Richie has suffered an ACL knee injury playing with his club Blackrock last weekend which will require surgery in the coming weeks.

“The Management Team, backroom team and entire panel of players wish Richie the very best in his recovery and ensure him of our fullest support in the months ahead.

“We have every faith in his ability to work through this challenge and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch with Limerick and Blackrock in 2019.”
