Cathy Mee will lead out the Limerick Ladies footballers this Sunday in the hope of capturing Limerick’s first All-Ireland title since they were victorious in the same grade in 2010. With the side gaining momentum throughout the year, Mee has said that the support of the county has been steadily growing and is hopeful of a big crowd at Headquarters this Sunday to cheer on the side.
“It’s definitely growing. I suppose we have to be getting on well to get it there. You can see as the matches get more important, the support is definitely growing. We had a good crowd back in Askeaton for the Carlow game which was basically a quarter final and then there was a huge crowd in Mallow.”
Limerick left it late in the semi-final to pull away from a dogged London team but in the end had seven points to spare over the Exiles. Mee, has said how the manner of the victory was important to the team after a couple of mixed results in the League earlier on in the year and a poor showing from the county last summer in the championship.
“We needed that because we’ve had an up and down season in the League. We were getting big wins and then we’d lose again so there’s been a lot of work put in this year because we had to start over in January from last year because last year was just a disaster.”
This Sunday, Limerick will once more face Louth, who have already beaten Limerick twice in 2018. These teams know each other inside out and Mee is confident that her side have learned from the previous pair of meetings and have what it takes to get the win on Sunday and earn All-Ireland honours.
“We know what they’re about. They beat us twice in the League. They have a really good side, there’s no point saying anything else than that… So, it’s going to be a huge battle but hopefully we come out the right side of it.”
