WATCH: Niamh Ryan looking forward to “getting out there” at Croke Park

The Limerick Ladies Footballers gear up for an All Ireland final this Sunday with the Junior title up for grabs against Louth. Limerick face the Leinster side in what is a repeat of the 2010 decider where the Treaty county came out on top.

Ahead of the final we caught up with Niamh Ryan to get her thoughts on the big game with hype building around the county.

“Funnily enough I’m a teacher in Limerick and a lot of my students have asked me was I nervous. I said, today not so much but ask me next week , it might be different. But ultimately looking forward to it and just getting out there to be honest.”

Sunday will see Croke Park host the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Ladies Football Final. For many of the side it will be their first taste of action at GAA HQ. However, Ryan has the added advantage of playing experience in Croke Park as a member of the Limerick camogie side for a couple of years.

“I was very lucky to be part of the camogie squad in 2013 and 2014 so I’ve been there (Croke Park) on days when we’ve lost and days when we’ve won. It adds to the occasion being such a big stadium but I suppose since you’re a child that’s always where you want to be.”

There are a number of the squad for Sundays game that contested the 2010 decider and Ryan says they have been a huge help in the lead up to the game.

“The girls are fantastic. Even before the semi final and the other games, they’re great to give some words of advice, especially to girls who haven’t played senior inter county football. No doubt they will be fantastic and bring their experience.”

With excitement building ahead of what promises to be a fascinating game, Ryan has commended the support of the Limerick faithful towards her and the side.

“Limerick is a sporting county. It’s absolutely fantastic, people try to get behind everything where possible… To see people of all ages wishing you well is fantastic.”
