Limerick SHC: Group 2 Round Up

Favourites for the title, Patrickswell and Na Piarsaigh got their campaigns off to winning starts whilst Monaleen ad Knockainey playing out a draw.

In the opening game of the weekend, Monaleen and Knockainey could not be separated, drawing 0-16 to 0-16 thanks to a late Mark O’Dwyer free for the city side.

There was little to choose between the sides entering the fixture with both teams keen to get a win knowing that the 2015 and 2016 champions were yet to come.

On their return to the senior ranks, Monaleen began the brighter and were 0-8 to 0-6 ahead at half time. Yet Knockainey looked to have won it until O’Dwyer, who would score 0-10 (0-7 frees), would grab a late equalizer. Patrick Kirby would notch 0-7 for the All Blacks.

Monaleen now face Cappamore next Saturday in Caherconlish. Knockainey will take on Adare looking to add to their opening round draw.

After getting the defence of their 2016 All-Ireland triumph off to the worst possible start last year, Na Piarsaigh made no mistake this time, dispatching newly promoted Cappamore 2-23 to 0-12.

The Caherdavin took a commanding 13 point lead into the break with them with David Dempsey and Adrian Breen getting the goals for Nap.

The second half was a more even affair but in truth Na Piarsaigh never looked like relinquishing their advantage. Next up for the city side is a clash with reigning champions Patrickswell, while Cappamore take on Monaleen.

In the most anticipated game of the group, Patrickswell overcame Adare thanks to a late surge of scoring, winning on a scoreline of 0-16 to 0-14.

In contrast to their high scoring clash 12 months ago, this was a more cautious affair with Adare taking a one point lead into the break 0-8 to 0-7. Adare still held a one point advantage heading into injury time before the Well rallied.

An Andrew Carroll free levelled for Gary Kirby’s men before Aaron Gillane gave them the lead for the first time in the 61st minute. Another Carroll free sealed the game for last years champions.

Adare now face Knockainey while all eyes will be on the Gaelic Grounds next Saturday for the heavyweight clash between Nap and the Well.
