Huge win for LIT as UL are knocked out of Fitzgibbon Cup today

There will be a new winner of the Fitzgibbon Cup as 2018 Champions UL have been knocked out of the competition after losing their second group game to NUIG today, 1-19 to 0-17 in Dangan.

Meanwhile LIT as good as booked their place in the knockout stages with a comprehensive 4-24 to 0-12 victory over the Garda College in Limerick today.

In Dangan, the home side got off to a flying start and led their opponents 0-7 to 0-4 within the opening quarter of an hour.

UL never closed this gap and this was further extended as half time approached with NUIG netting the games only goal for a six point cushion.

At the half, the Galway side led 1-12 to 0-8, albeit with the aid of a breeze.

The second half continued in the same vein with UL struggling to close the gap.

When Clare’s Conor Cleary was sent off all hope looked lost but UL battled to their credit and had the deficit reduced to four with time running out.

UL couldn’t find a goal and in the end Galway would land the last score to move them a step closer to the knockout rounds.

In Limerick, LIT were full value for their 24 point win over the Garda College.

Pallasgreen’s Brian Fanning notched his second goal of the game early on before Na Piarsaigh’s Peter Casey scored their second on fifteen minutes to give them a commanding 2-6 to 0-3 lead.

Clare’s Peter Duggan added their third on 28 minutes as they went into the break with a 3-11 to 0-5 advantage.

The Limerick side added 1-13 in the second half as they cruised to victory.

LIT face Trinity next Thursday knowing a win will guarantee a place in the quarter finals.
