Limerick FC pick up massive victory in Cobh

Limerick FC secured a vital three points in the SSE Airtricity League First Division with a 3-2 victory over Cobh Ramblers at St. Colman’s Park.

Two goals from the penalty spot from Darren Murphy along with a goal from Shane Tracy provided the win for Tommy Barrett’s men.

Limerick were boosted by the return of trio Jason Hughes, Robbie Williams and Sean McSweeney from last week’s defeat to Drogheda.

The visitors were awarded a first half penalty when Robbie Williams was fouled and Murphy converted his second spot-kick in as many weeks to give the Super Blues the lead.

As half-time approached, Limerick doubled their lead as Paul Hunt parried a shot from Sean McSweeney before Shane Tracy dispatched the rebound.

The Shannonsiders had a disastrous start to the second half as Cobh’s Charlie Lyons headed a Stephen Kenny corner to the back of the net.

As the final quarter approached, former Limerick FC player and Cobh captain Shane O’Connor scored a free-kick to level the scores.

However, Limerick were not to be denied and with ten minutes remaining were awarded a second penalty. Kieran Hanlon was fouled by O’Connor and Murphy netted his second penalty of the game to regain the lead.

It was a massive victory for the club after a difficult week which saw the players vote in favour of strike action if their wage issue is not sorted by early next week.

The win sends Limerick back to fifth in the league and just five points from the leaders Cabinteely who were beaten 5-0 by Drogheda United.
