By Lunchtime this afternoon Munster will know their Champions Cup Pool opponents for next seasons competition.

With so many potentially exciting narratives in play from a Munster perspective, this afternoon’s draw will make for very interesting viewing not just for Johann Van Grann and his new blockbuster coaching ticket, but for Ronan O’Gara, who might find his new team (La Rochelle) being drawn with Munster this afternoon in what would be a great away trip for Munster fans.

Another potential pair on the cards featuring Munster Links will be Racing 92. The Paris Club who have Simon Zebo and Donnacha Ryan on their books avoided Munster last season but were drawn into the same Pool with Munster the previous two years in 2016/17 & 2017/2018. Racing added further Munster stock to their club this Summer when they announced that Mike Prendergast would be their new backs and attack coach next season, making them another club to watch out for in this afternoons draw if you are a Munster fan.

Full Details of this afternoons draw

While it seems complex, 14 tiers are already known with just six of the 20 to be finalised before the pool draws take place.

It is possible that Exeter and Glasgow are drawn as Tier 1 sides leaving Clermont to drop into the Tier 2 category. In that scenario, they could be drawn in Leinster’s group for example.

After the Tiers are decided and the pool draw takes place key principles will apply. The first is that each pool will have at least one club from each of the three leagues. Each of the five pools will also have one club from each of the four tiers.

There will be no more than two clubs from the same league in a pool and no pool will contain two Pro14 clubs from the same country thus ensuring that Leinster, Munster, Ulster and Connacht are kept apart at least until the knockout phase.

Finally, clubs from the same league will be kept apart until the allocation of the Tier 4 clubs. Tier 4 itself is already complete and contains the sixth-ranked clubs from each league, Bath, Benetton, Montpellier, Sale Sharks and the Ospreys.
