With the Rugby World Cup fast approaching and Joe Schmidt’s squad announcement imminent, each day we will look at a different part of the squad to try and decipher who will make the final 31-man squad for the tournament in Japan.
Schmidt is likely to opt for a split in favour of forwards with 17/14 a possible outcome.
With that in mind, Schmidt may opt for a split of 2 Scrum-halves, 3 Out-halves and 8 between the Back five positions.
Today we will look at Out-Halves in the sixth part of the series.

On the Plane
As reigning World Rugby Player of the Year, no one is more assured of their place in the squad than Johnny Sexton.
Munster’s Joey Carbery has shown to be more than able backup, but his injury has proved worrying. However, he will still travel and may be an outlet at 12 also.
Likely to Travel
Jack Carty and Ross Byrne are fighting it out for that third spot on the plane. Both offer very differing styles with Carty more creative while Byrne is supreme in game management. With Ireland’s attacking play lethargical at times througout the year, Carty may well get the nod.
Missing Out
As such Ross Byrne looks like missing out despite his excellent form for Leinster this season. The English game certainly wont help his chances.
