WATCH: Stephen Larkham on settling in at Munster and areas needing improvement

While the Irish internationals are gearing up for the fast approaching Rugby World Cup, Munster’s newest coaching addition, Stephen Larkham has been getting to know the players at UL.

The backs coach brings huge experience with him as he tries to unlock a Munster backline that was static at times last year.

Speaking at his introductory press conference, Larkham spoke about the emphasis on improving the attack.

“We had a real rush last week for all the attack to get into the programme. I’ve had no time really to think about anything else.”

While the Munster attack was much maligned last season, Larkham says that the stats indicate to a pretty productive attacking campaign with the Australian focused on improving in weaker areas.

“If you look at our attack from last year, it’s a pretty good record honestly. We averaged seven tries in Cork and averaged 26 points, across the two competitions.”

“We probably didn’t create enough line breaks or beat enough players one on one so we’re looking at that detail at the moment.”

“Hopefully maintain good things that we had last year while improving on other areas.”

With the majority of Munster’s starting backs currently with Joe Schmidt, Larkham is very excited at the prospect of those players returning after the World Cup.

“It’s a pretty impressive backline.”

“The players at the top level, when we get those back, we have a really competitive team that could beat anyone in the competition.”
