Heartbreak for Munsters in Senior Cup Final

It would be another final that ended in heartbreak for Young Munster in their bid for a Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Challenge Cup title last night losing out to Cork Constitution by 24-17.

The Cup win for ‘Cons’ marks their 30th competition title while yesterday’s defeat for the Limerick club marks their third Senior Cup Final loss in five years.

Munster Academy player Sean French converted two long-distance penalities to give Cork Con a 6-0 early lead.

Young Munster soon followed up with a penalty of their own thanks to out-half Evan Cusack to keep within three points. French kicked his third penalty of the night to move 9-3 ahead.

The first try of the night came from Cons John Sutton which Gerry Hurley converted putting Cork Con 16-3 ahead at halftime.

Cork Con extended their lead within minutes of the second half with a fantastic individual effort from JJ O’Neill to get a second try for his side on the scoreboard.

Young Munster Captain Alan Kennedy led from the front with his response when he crossed the whitewash, while Cusack added the extras from a tricky position to get themselves back in the game.

The comeback was looking great from the Limerick side having dominated possession in the closing stages of the game as well as a Conor Bartley try, but Cons held strong on the defensive front to bring another Munster Senior Cup home to Temple Hill.
