It has been confirmed this evening that there will be no senior soccer side representing Limerick in the 2020 Airtricity League First Division.
The FAI today confirmed that all teams who applied for First Division licences have been granted those licences ahead of the kick-off in 9 days time.
It appears to suggest that Limerick FC opted not to apply for a licence to compete in the second tier this season. In January, Pat O’Sullivan successfully won a High Court case against the FAI as the football association broke their own rules by not inviting Limerick FC to apply for a licence.
Today’s news brings to an end a farcical saga in Limerick which saw the recently formed Treaty United disband due to threats of legal action from Limerick FC owner O’Sullivan.
The group were initially called Limerick United but the name had already been registered by O’Sullivan in 2008 and therefore the group were re-branded as Treaty United.
Last week, Conn Murray confirmed that the group would not be joining the underage and women’s leagues which was a big blow to the city.
At the end of last week, Limerick FC were active on social media and were attempting to recruit young players to join their ranks for the new 2020 Airtricity League underage season and no further update has been given on that application
With no known stadium to play in and no coaches on the books, it appears unlikely that Limerick FC will be able to sort out the off the field issues in time for next week’s deadline.
