Serpentine, ridden by Limerick jockey Emmet McNamara and trained by Aidan O’Brien sent shockwaves through racing as they pulled off an unlikely 25/1 shot to win the Investec Derby at Epsom.
O’Brien had six horses in the race but it was the Limerick jockey’s mount who dominated the race from start to finish, having only shed his maiden tag at the Curragh last Saturday.
It appeared as though Serpentine was given the role of setting the early pace but the remaining field allowed allowed him build up enough of a lead.
The gap proved too much to claw back with Serpentine eventually running out a winner by 5 and a half lengths giving trainer O’Brien a record 8th win in the race.
