Weekend Round Up!

It was an eventful sporting weekend with the resumption of the Six Nations and the Superbowl.

Recap the busy couple of days below.

Rugby: Ireland kicked off their 2021 Six Nations campaign with a loss in Cardiff. Despite Peter O’Mahony’s first half dismissal, Ireland lead 13-6 at the break with Tadhg Beirne dotting down for the Irish. However, the Welsh’s numerical advantage eventually told as they claimed a 21-16. The previous day, Scotland earned a first Six Nations win in Twickenham since 1983 as they defeated England 11-6 while France ran out 50-10 winners over Italy.

Soccer: Manchester City stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League with a 4-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield. Second placed Man United could only manage a 3-3 draw at home to Everton. Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Sheffield United moved them up to fifth, a point behind Liverpool with Sheffield bottom of the table, 14 points adrift. Newcastle’s 3-2 victory over Southampton moved them up to 16th ahead of Burney who drew 1-1 with 15th placed Brighton. Spurs returned to winning ways with a 2-0 result against West Brom. Aston Vvilla moved four points ahead of Arsenal with a 1-0 win. Elsewhere Fulham and West Ham played out a 0-0 draw as did Leicester and Wolves.

Racing: It was Willie Mullin’s weekend at the Dublin Racing Festival as he claimed nine victories, six of which were Grade 1’s at Leopardstown. Simon Torrens had two winners fo JP McManus on Saurday, firstly guiding A Wave of the Sea to victory in the Matheson Hurdle for trainer Joseph O’Brien and then piloting Pat Fahy’s Drop The Anchor to a narrow win in the Ladbrokes Hurdle. On Saturday, Mullins described the four winners as ‘fantasy’ before adding an incredible five the following day. On Sunday Kemboy was the big winner in the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup. Rachel Blackmore and Honeysuckle took the feature race on Saturday as they combined in the Irish Champion Hurdle.

Golf: On the PGA Tour, Brooks Koepka claimed the Phoenix Open with a six-under-par final round to finish on -19 , one shot ahead of Kyoung-Hoon Lee and Xander Schauffele. Dustin Johnson was the winner at the Saudi International finishing on -15, two shots clear of Tony Finau and Justin Rose.

NFL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers were crowned SuperBowl LIV Champions after destroying the reigning champions Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in Raymond James Stadium. The Buccaneers had three first half touchdowns with Tom Brady combing with Antonio Brown nd Rob Grownkowski twice in the endzone. Leonard Fournette rushed for Tampa Bay’s fourth in the second half. It is Brady’s seventh title and first in his maiden year with the Buccaneers.
