Treaty United had their first ever game last night as they picked up a 1-1 draw with Waterford FC in a preseason friendly in WIT.
Joel Coulstrain grabbed the club’s first ever goal as they gear up for their maiden season beginning on March 26 against Bray Wanderers.
Treaty Manager Tommy Barrett was a guest on Between the Stripes TV as he discussed the formation of the side prior to last night’s friendly.
“We got the confirmation on a Saturday and we had trials, well i suppose training on the Tuesday as I had identified 33 players. And I had to have the squad finalised by Thursday so essentially I had two days and now we have four weeks to prepare.
“But it’s done now. It condensed it and we had to make the decisions but we made the most of it.
“We’ve got a bit of experience. I had to go with guys I knew. We have a lot of ex 19’s and first Division players who played with me at Limerick in previous years.
“They’re the guys that want to play. It’s probably gonna cost them money, between traveling in time. But they want to be here, they’re hungry lads and that’s the guys we want.
“First year is about sustainability on a tight budget. We will grow the club before we look at success on the pitch. In saying that, we are not going to make excuses. We are going to give it our best shot. It is what it is and that’s the hand we have been dealt. The minute you cross that line you have to do your best effort.
“We will give it a go, we definitely won’t be found wanting.”
Barrett also looked into the game with Waterford, the potential for expansion in Munster and the upcoming season. Catch it in full below, courtesy of the ‘Between the Stripes TV‘ YouTube channel.
