John Tuohy’s side will need to be patient and see how Saturday’s game envelopes.

Limerick face into the final round of the All Ireland Camogie Championship group stages against Wexford in Bruff this Saturday knowing that a win by 7 points or more will guarantee them a quarter final place.

Speaking with Sporting Limerick, The Weekly Observer’s Matt O’Callaghan feels that Limerick have made life difficult for themselves following the opening round defeat to Offaly.

“It’s that opening round defeat to Offaly that has really come back to haunt them. It would be very cut and dry going into Saturday had they beaten them because Cork, Limerick and Wexford would be already through but look they have to face the situation that they have now.’

Should Limerick fail to beat Wexford by more than 7 points then, focus switches to the Offaly v Tipperary game. A draw or a win for Offaly and a win for Limerick would see John Tuohy’s side go through.

Tipperary still have a chance as well though should they manage to secure a win and Limerick fail to do so. Despite all the permutations O’Callaghan says that Limerick need to focus on their own game.

“It’s a fascinating weekend but from a Limerick point of view the only thing that matters is victory, anything other than victory and Limerick are out of the race. The most clean-cut thing from a Limerick point of view is to win by 7 points and they are through.”

O’Callaghan agrees that it may be a worry that Limerick will be coming into the game against Wexford focusing too heavily on trying to bridge that 7 point gap.

“It certainly conditions thinking throughout the game and approaching the game. Limerick will have to be patient and see how the game develops.”

He believes that John Tuohy’s side will firstly need to ensure that they win the game against a Wexford side who are in transition but still have plenty of experience within the ranks.

“They have already beaten Offaly and Tipperary, they are a good side and they are rebuilding. They have an awful lot of players that have vast experience, players that have won All Ireland’s and have been through what is basically a golden era of Wexford camogie.”

Limerick’s form hasn’t been up to the same standard as they had shown in the Munster Championship or the league coming into the All Ireland group games. They struggled to get up and running in the early stages but like any good side they have hung in there and still have their destiny in their own hands. O’Callaghan believes the win over Tipperary in the last round will give them confidence.

“Limerick dug out a great result in the wide-open spaces of Thurles. They have to build on that form and build on the confidence that that win has given them, and hope that it takes them over the line and into the quarter final”
