Johnny Sexton played the final Lions test with a broken wrist

Lions and Irish out-half, Sexton, played almost the full match with a broken wrist, scans have revealed.

According to a reports today, Jonathan Sexton went into the final Lions test with a broken wrist and still played over 70 minutes.

Sexton picked up the injury in the Lions second test victory over the All Blacks in Wellington the week previous. The Leinster playmaker was still named at out half for the third test despite the nasty injury.

Sexton began the third test with his lower right arm heavily strapped and according to the report, he also ruptured a tendon in his ankle in the first half of the decider.

In the second half, Sexton was taken off for a Head Injury Assessment but returned to the field to play on until the 73rd minute before being replaced by Englishman Ben Te’o.

The impressive Sexton racked up 384 minutes on tour, with only five players playing more than him. However these injuries aren’t likely to curtail the Leinster man’s pre season plans as the tendon injury does not need surgery while his wrist is currently in a splint.

This will be welcome news to Leinster head coach Leo Cullen who has lost his two starting centres, in Gary Ringrose and Robbie Henshaw, to injury over the summer.
