‘I haven’t played enough rugby’ – O’Mahony admits Lions Tour call is unlikely

Peter O’Mahony has conceded that a place for him in this year’s British and Irish Lions squad is unlikely.

O’Mahony missed four matches in the Six Nations due to suspension and has not played as much rugby as he would have liked in the last six months for club or country.

Munster’s Rainbow Cup fixture with Leinster this Saturday is the last game the Corkman will play before Warren Gatland announces his squad for their tour of South Africa and the Munster captain was yesterday asked if selection is on his radar.

“I don’t think I’ve played enough rugby if I’m going to be honest with myself.

“That’s just the way my cards have fallen and obviously the Six Nations is the big one at this time of the year. Unfortunately that didn’t go very well with the way I ended up with the red card and that kind of thing.

“Look that’s just the way it went and unfortunately I haven’t played enough to consider myself for that tour.

“Hopefully I’ll look forward to the tour to Fiji if that goes ahead, depending on selection with Ireland for that obviously.

“There’s plenty to play for with Ireland and with the Rainbow Cup now I’m looking forward to putting a run of games together hopefully.

“You need to be playing regularly to be playing well and that’s what I need to do. “
