Former Limerick FC defender Tony Whitehead ‘not surprised’ by Treaty United’s dream start

Former Limerick FC defender Tony Whithead joined Sporting Limerick’s Adrian Finnin to talk life at Limerick FC, his time in New Zealand with Southern United and what he’s made of Treaty United’s season so far.

Charleville man Whitehead appeared 76 times in the League of Ireland Premier Division and has particularly fond memories of playing under managers Martin Russell and Neil McDonald.

When asked about Treaty United’s form in the League of Ireland, Whitehead said it is no surprise to see Tommy Barrett succeeding with the local talent available to him.

“I’m not surprised at all,” admitted the Bury player. “With Tommy involved it was always going to be the right appointment.

“He’s someone who knows every player in the city inside out and he’s put together a brilliant squad.”

Treaty United have played four matches this season. The Limerick men defeated Wexford three weeks ago to collect their first ever win and have also drawn with Bray Wanderers, Galway United and Cobh Ramblers.

While Whitehead has been hugely impressed by the team, he also feels they are unlucky not to have even more points on the board after four games.

“They’ve been unlucky not to pick up another two points and it would be massive now to have eight points.

“I suppose being unbeaten in four games, I think Tommy and everyone involved in the club would have bitten your hand off for that a couple of weeks ago.”

Treaty United take on Cork City tonight at the Market’s Field live on LOI TV (19:45 KO) as Tommy Barrett’s men hope to continue heir excellent start to the season.
