Mungret St Pauls claim Premier U19 Football championship after win over St Pats

Mungret claimed their first Minor Premier football title since 2017 as they overcame St Patricks in Mick Neville Park on Wednesday evening.

Mungret’s superior threat in front of goal proved the difference as they eventually ran out 4-10 to 2-9 winners.

In a slow burning first half, there was just one point between the sides after a quarter of an hour with Mungret leading 0-3 to 0-2.

The gap was out to three when Mungret struck for their first goal after 25 minutes. St Pats replied with a point but a second goal had Mungret’s lead out to nine points, 2-6 to 0-3 at the half.

The sides traded the first eight scores of the second half with Mungret maintaining a nine point lead with less than ten minutes of normal time remaining.

But then St Patricks struck for a quickfire double of goals and with five minutes to play, the deficit was just two points.

And heading into injury time, there was just a point between the sides with the game finely poised at 2-9 to 2-10 in Mungret’s favour.

But there was still time for a strong Mungret finish as they grabbed a brace of late goals to claim the title.

Mungret’s win was a second in five years with Fr Casey’s winning three in a row in the meantime.

Mungret’s Intermediate squad face Kildimo Pallaskenry in the quarter-finals of the Limerick IFC on Saturday.
