Famous Limerick Leprechauns return to action in Kilkee this Saturday

The Limerick Leprechauns take to the beach for their annual charity game in Kilkee this weekend as they take on Kilkee ‘Fallen Stars’.

The unique club is comprised of former players from all of Limericks clubs, whose normal relationship is one of fierce sporting rivalry, and uses Limerick’s tight knit rugby community bond to raise funds for those less fortunate in our society.

Since the clubs formation during the season of 1985-86 the vast majority of money raised , over €1,000,000, has been donated to non Government funded local charities and good causes with emphasis on children’s needs.

The formation of the Limerick Leprechauns coincided with the centenary celebrations of two closely linked clubs in Limerick, namely Shannon and Garryowen in 1984. The idea was first mooted in Myles Breen’s pub on Shannon St. Those involved on organising the very first game versus Garryowen included Larry Breen (Garryowen), Michael O’Flaherty(Young Munster), Johnsey Maloney (Old Crescent) and Mike Ryan (Shannon).

Many Local Charities have benefited from the Leprechauns efforts including Bawnmore, Milford Hospice, and Limerick school for Deaf children, Parents and Friends of the mentally handicapped, Alzheimer’s Society, Samaritans, CARI, Marine search and rescue and the Down syndrome society.

The game kicks off at Kilkee beach is at 2.45 on Saturday, August 12th. Much of the day’s/night’s fundraising and action will be based at Scott’s Pub, owned by Garryowen club man Mickey Martin.
