Mary I fall short as Cian Lynch helps NUIG into Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-finals

The 2016 and ’17 champions were beaten in Dangan last night.

A Cian Lynch led NUIG held off Mary I in the second round of the Fitzgibbon Cup last night to seal their place in the last eight of the competition with a game to the spare.

Their 1-20 to 2-8 win eliminates Mary I after UCC beat UCD in the groups other game.

NUIG led 0-12 to 0-5 at the interval in tough conditions in Dangan. But Mary I replied with an early second half goal to reduce the deficit to a goal. But the Galway side responded with a green flag of their own and from here they kept the visitors at arms length to secure the win and a place in the quarter-finals.

At the Mardyke, UCC secured their passage to the knockout stages of the Fitzgibbon Cup with a 3-22 to 1-14 win over UCD. That win eliminates UCD who face Mary I in a dead rubber next week.

Meanwhile, TUS Midwest will be looking to prolong their season today when they welcome TU Dublin to Moylish at 2pm. The Limerick side were well beaten by UL last weekend but a win today will be enough to see them through should the Castletroy outfit beat TUD next weekend.
