Six Nations release statement following South African rumours

Earlier in the week rumours began to spread of South Africa joining the Six Nations displacing Italy with the Italians currently on a 34 match losing streak in the Six Nations.

The Six Nations have come out and made a statement dismissing any talks of a reform to the competition in terms of replacing teams, amidst the rumours that South Africa will replace Italy following their lengthy losing streak.

“Six Nations Rugby, comprising the Six Unions and Federations and CVC, wish to confirm that they are not entertaining any discussion nor developing any plans to add or replace any participating Union. All it’s energy is focused on the current strategic discussions regarding the July and November international windows and structure of the global season, and to ensure a positive outcome for the development of the game.”

South African rugby, and all southern hemisphere teams for that matter, have had a recent drought in player retention losing out to the riches of the Northern hemisphere.

With a big money deal at stake it seems South Africa began to eat before checking for poison. The backlash this initial move has received is clear to be seen all over social media platforms.

However, the Springboks have signed a contract with Sanzaar which means they will play in the Rugby Championship until 2025.
