Limerick’s Diarmaid Byrnes comfortably named #1 in Top 10 Hurlers of 2022 voting

It was a stellar year for the Limerick hurler who won his fourth All-Ireland title.

After an incredible campaign that concluded with a third successive All-Ireland medal, Diarmaid Byrnes has been voted as the best hurler of 2022 after a public vote determining the top ten.

The Patrickswell man utterly dominated the voting and to no surprise, after a fantastic campaign for the wing-back where he broke the record for most points for a defender in the championship with 0-36.

Eight of Byrnes’ title winning Limerick team-mates have also made the top 10, with Aaron Gillane and Barry Nash making up the top three.

Clare’s Tony Kelly and Kilkenny veteran TJ Reid were also voted onto the list, finishing 8th and 10th respectively.

Top 10 Hurlers of 2022 voted by the public.

Byrnes topped the voting by some margin, with almost twice the number of points as second placed Aaron Gillane.

How the poll worked:

We asked you to select your top 10 hurlers from a list of twenty names that stood out in the championship this year.

When a player was selected as someone’s first choice, they received ten points. If they were selected second they received nine and third meant eight points and so on.

The points were then added up altogether, with the winner Diarmaid Byrnes earning a staggering 4596 points. The wing-back earned 304 votes (3040 points) alone for first place, proving the quality of hurling he was playing this year.

Second placed Aaron Gillane was left with 2559 points while his third-placed teammate Barry Nash ended on 2431 points.
