Catriona Davis hails “extra-special” Ladies SFC triumph as Monagea retain crown

It was the first time in their history that Monagea retained the Ladies Senior Football Championship title.

Monagea secured successive Limerick Ladies Senior Football Championship titles as they edged out St. Ailbes in a closely encountered 1-10 to 1-7 final victory in Bruff on Sunday.

It was an action-packed game throughout, with the West side trailing by as many as three points early in the second half. However the champions battled hard to draw the sides level and got their noses in front with fifteen to play, unrelenting from here.

The West Limerick side saw out the rest of the game to seal the win and secure their fourth SFC title, further etching their names in the history books as back-to-back champions.

Scoring a whopping 1-6 in the game, Monagea’s Catriona Davis was delighted to secure the title and hailed her side for the work that’s been put into the club to achieve it.

“It (back-to-back) makes it extra special but the work we have put in over the last couple of years, trying to get it over the line and then it didn’t happen for us but I’m absolutely delighted we’re after doing back-to-back now today,

“We’d a ferocious battle against Ballylanders Wednesday night and to try and recover and bring it on today, I’m just delighted to say we are back-to-back champions, it’s a great feeling.”

The side now look forward to a Munster championship after their victory, with a short turnaround leaving the Limerick champions with only two weeks to prepare.

They managed to reach a Munster final last year but were on the losing end of the tie to Castleisland Desmonds by just a point but Davis is hopeful that they can go one better this year.

We’re going to enjoy this win, we’re going to celebrate tonight, I think we deserve it and we’ll put the heads down and get straight back into it then and hopefully go one step further this year and hopefully win a Munster final.”
