HIGHLIGHTS | Limerick hold out for Tailteann Cup win over Longford

A late Tommy Griffin point was the insurance score Limerick needed to get over the line as they held on for a valuable victory.

Limerick were made to work for their first ever Tailteann Cup win against Longford but Mark Fitzgerald’s side had enough to see off the Leinster outfit in the TUS Gaelic Grounds.

It finished 2-16 to 1-16 in Limerick’s favour with the visitors getting within two points after a late rally in the Tailteann opener. But a late Tommy Griffin point was the insurance score Limerick needed to get over the line.

Cathal Downes kicked Limerick into the lead with a well taken goal early on as the Treaty took a four point advantage into the interval.

Limerick furthered that lead as Brian Donovan made no mistake from the spot after winning a contentious-looking penalty. But Longford raised a green flag of their own late on to reduce the margin to 2-15 to 1-6. Griffin was on hand to stem the tide as Limerick secured the points.

They now go on to face fellow round one winners Carlow this Saturday while Longford host Wicklow.
