The Shannonsiders have been in disastrous form of late, recording back to back 3-0 losses before a 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Waterford. Last time out, Barrett’s side lost 1-0 at home to Cobh Ramblers, and they know an upturn in form is needed for them if they are to have any hope of promotion. United sit in eighth place in the table, five points off the playoffs.
It’s a stark contrast to Athlone, who are third in the table and have been flying recently, coming into the game on the back of three successive wins. Playing at home will favour them, as they have only lost three times at their grounds all year, boasting one of the most impressive home records in the league.
For the visitors, Treaty will be hoping Curran can continue his fantastic scoring form, his brace earlier this season against Athlone earlier adding to his contribution as the sides top scorer this season. Captain Marc Ludden was the hero in the Shannonsiders win over Friday’s opponents in May, his late goal giving his side all three points.
Automatic promotion appears to be off the cards for both sides, with Galway United storming away in first place, and Athlone aren’t safe in their playoff spot. They sit nine points ahead of Treaty, but a strong second half to the season for the Limerick outfit could see them usurp their Leinster rivals.
The result on Friday night could have a big say in terms of how the table shapes up come the end of the season, and Barrett will be hoping his side come through it for the better.
