Limerick’s Sarah Lavin wins Bronze at the European Games

The time on Wednesday was the second fastest of Lavin’s career after she recorded a PB of 12.79 last summer.

Sarah Lavin fulfilled a life long ambition over the weekend as she claimed the bronze medal for Ireland in the 100m hurdles at the European Games.

The Limerick native recorded a time of 12.82 on Wednesday which was the third fastest of the event which compromises of three divisions that are part of the European Athletics Team Championships which are held in collaboration with the Games.

The Emerald AC athlete beat out France’s Laeticia Bapté by one hundredth of a second in becoming the first Division 3 athlete to win a medal.

Speaking of her delight at winning the race, the 29-year-old thanked all those who got her to this position after a difficult last few months with Lavin tragically losing her partner, rally driver Craig Breen in April.

“I’ve dreamt of winning this major medal since I was a kid. It was a strange way to do it, to have that run by my myself the other day and then having to play the waiting game.

“I’ve had incredibly special people helping me over the last month, over the last year but ultimately I think there’s someone very special up there helping me.

“To get bronze and to be a hundredth of a second off silver, being really tight to the best that were there. For everybody, thank you all so much.”
