Kildimo Pallaskenry the early pace setters | Limerick SFC Round One Recap

There is little recovery time for sides with the second round of fixtures to be played this weekend.

The Limerick Senior Football Championship kicked off over the last weekend with six fixtures decided across the county.

There were no draws with Kildimo Pallaskenry, Newcastle West, St Kierans, Adare, Na Piarsaigh and Galtee Gaels picking up the points.

There is little recovery time for sides with the second round of fixtures to be played this weekend as we look back on the opening set of games.

Group One

2021 Intermediate champions Kildimo Pallaskenry sent out a warning signal to the rest of the competition with a commanding 3-15 to 1-7 win over Claughaun in Clarina on Saturday evening. Darragh Deegan and Peter Nash had early goals for KP who led by by fifteen points at the break. Claughaun did grab a goal in reply in the second half but a Dylan Corrigan three pointer ensured a healthy win to kick off the campaign for last year’s quarter-finalists.

They top the group ahead of champions Newcastle West who were pushed all the way by Fr Caseys last Thursday. Three green flags paved the way for the Magpies as they edged their West rivals 3-7 to 1-11 to begin the campaign with a win.

League champions St Kierans survived a scare from Oola as they scraped through their opener by a solitary point. A first half goal from the West side was the difference at the interval but Oola came back within one but couldn’t find the equaliser with Kierans holding on for a 1-5 to 1-4 win.

Round One Results

  • Newcastle West 3-7 : 1-11 Fr Caseys
  • St Kierans 1-5 : 1-4 Oola
  • Kildimo Pallaskenry 3-15 : 1-7 Claughaun

Group Two

In the standout tie in group two of the championship, Adare just got the better of Monaleen with a one-point win in a hard fought clash in Bruff. The City side had the games opening score with Darragh Murray finding the net of the West men. But last year’s finalists replied with the game level at the break. Adare kicked the first three scores after the interval and while Monaleen drew level with five to play, Adare kicked on with the next two as the City outfit could only find one score in reply to fall to a 0-10 to 1-6 defeat.

In their first game back in the grade, Na Piarsaigh were comprehensive winners over Ballysteen with a 2-8 to 0-7 win in Clarina. In a low scoring first half, the Intermediate champions led 0-5 to 0-3 but crucially found the games first goal early in the second period through John Moloney. A Kevin Nolan penalty gave the City team breathing room as they held out for a seven-point win.

Galtee Gaels left it late to see off Ballylanders with the Childs’ brothers Tommie and Robbie combing for the final three scores as they claimed a 0-14 to 1-10 win in Kilfinane. With the aid of a strong breeze, Galtee led by two points at the turn of ends. They controlled the majority of the second period but found themselves behind late on after Danny Frewen and Jimmy Barry Murphy linked up for the games only goal. However, Tommie drew them within one before a superb mark from his brother levelled up proceedings. The former inter county midfielder secured the win with another long range effort to kick off their campaign with the win.

Round One Results

  • Adare 0-10 : 1-6 Monaleen
  • Na Piarsaigh 2-8 : 0-7 Ballysteen
  • Galtee Gaels 0-14 to 1-10 Ballylanders
