Sadness at passing of former Limerick GAA County Board Chairman

The high point of his career in GAA administration came when he was elected chairman of Limerick County Board in 1995.

Limerick GAA was plunged into mourning this week when former County Board chairman Brendan Danaher passed away.

Brendan, a stalwart of the Castletown-Ballyagran club and Limerick GAA, passed away this Monday at University Hospital Limerick.

A man of diverse interests, he served for 18 years as a member of the then Limerick County Council and was also a member and long-time chairman of Golden Vale Marts.

His abiding lifelong interest was in the GAA with his club and also at county level, serving both at different levels for many years. He was chairman of Castletown-Ballyagran GAA for many years and the high point of his career in GAA administration came when he was elected chairman of Limerick County Board in 1995, taking over from Gerry Bennis.

He went on to serve in that position until 1997 when he was succeeded by Donal Fitzgibbon.

Leading the tributes this week, Limerick GAA chairman Séamus McNamara said;

“On behalf of Limerick County Board I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to the Danaher family on the sad passing of Brendan.”

“Brendan held the position of Limerick County Board Chairman from 1995 – 1997 as well as being chairman of his own Club Castletown-Ballyagran for a number of years.”

“He was a member of the field committee that was involved in the purchase of the current back field in Ballyagran. He was a manager with the Castletown-Ballyagran County Junior Hurling winning team in 1986.”

“His contribution to Limerick GAA cannot be understated being involved as a selector with Limerick minor and Under 21 hurling teams. He was a proud Limerick man and his commitment and dedication to his own club Castletown-Ballyagran will always be remembered.”

Predeceased by his wife Kay, the former chairman is survived by his daughter Rosemaree, sons Ambrose and Pierse and grandchildren Brianna and Alexandra and extended family.

Brendan will repose this Wednesday evening from 6pm at Daffy’s Funeral Home, Ballyagran followed by evening prayers at 8pm. Brendan’s Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Thursday in St. Michael’s Church, Ballyagran followed by burial afterwards to Colmanswell Cemetery.
