Treaty United pick up point away to league leaders Cork City | HIGHLIGHTS

It was the visitors who had the ball in the net before the half-time whistle, as Byrne was quickest to react to a breaking ball in the box to punish his former club and pull his current side level.

A spirited Treaty United performance saw them come away from league leaders Cork City with a point on Friday evening.

An Evan McLaughlin penalty had the hosts in front after eight minutes at Turners Cross, but Alec Byrne’s goal sent the sides in level at the break, and ultimately at full-time.

Cork remain top of the table by some distance, ten points clear of their nearest competitors UCD. Treaty on the other hand are languishing in eighth, ten points away from the playoff positions they so desperately crave.

City were awarded their early penalty when Thomas Considine handled the ball as he attempted to clear a cross.

McLaughlin stepped up and sent Corey Chambers the wrong way, his left footed effort rolled into the bottom right corner to give the hosts the lead.

Chambers was called into action throughout the opening half, and McLaughlin tested the keeper again with an effort from outside the box, which he managed to save.

A glorious opportunity fell the way of 16-year-old Jaden Umeh shortly before the break, and he really should have tested Chambers from point-blank range, his header going over the bar.

It was the visitors who had the ball in the net before the half-time whistle, as Byrne was quickest to react to a breaking ball in the box to punish his former club and pull his current side level.

In truth, there was not much by way of concrete chances in the second half, perhaps Lee Devitt’s miscued effort from a corner the closest we came to a winner at Turners Cross.

Tommy Barrett’s men take a valuable point back to Limerick, and regroup ahead of this Friday’s meeting with Longford Town at the Markets Field.
