Gerald Griffins claim county junior ladies football title.

Not long ofter 10am on Saturday morning and Gerald Griffins had already played a hard-fought 60 minutes of football to win a county junior championship title.

They beat Groody Gaels on a scoreline of 4-7 to 3-5 in the 9am decider in Knockainey and put a controversial week behind them.

City club Groody Gaels had requested an alternative date due to a clash with ‘an international women’s rugby tournament’, but the county board said that Gerald Griffins were unable to accommodate that before the end of the calendar year due to player availability, and so left them with little option but to schedule the early start.

Groody started well with an early Maeve Higgins goal but it served only to spur Gerald Griffins on as the West Limerick bounced straight back. Former county star Dymphna O’Brien was to the fore of their attack finishing with a personal tally of 1-6.

It was a powerful first half display from side from the parishes of Loughill Ballyhahill as Avril Dalton, Ciara O’Donnell and Amy Hanrahan all registered first half goals to take a 3-6 to 2-4 lead into the break.

Gerald Griffins would have expected an onslaught in the second half as Groody had the wind at their backs but an O’Brien goal after the restart gave them some breathing space.

Ashling Duhig responded for Groody with her second goal of the match as the city side threw the kitchen sink at their rivals.

The west Limerick side held on despite a late rally, 4-7 to 3-5 the final score as they bring the title back to Loughill-Ballyhahill after losing the last two finals.
