AIL Round-Up | Shannon and Old Crescent earn first victories of the campaign in Limerick derbies

Garryowen and UL Bohemians remain the only two Limerick sides yet to win a game this season.

Saturday’s action in the Energia AIL saw three of the six Limerick outfits victorious including a couple of local derbies as round five of the competition took place.

In Division 1A, Shannon earned the local bragging rights against Garryowen as they earned their first win since promotion in a 30-19 victory. Both teams were on the hunt for their maiden wins of the campaign after slow starts but Shannon took control of the game early on with a 25-5 half-time lead with tries coming from Jordan Prenderville and Luke Rigney. Garryowen kicked three tries and converted twice but to no avail as they sit rooted to them bottom of D1A while Shannon move out of the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Young Munster suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this season after they were beaten 25-20 away to Ballynahinch. A 12-3 half-time lead proved insufficient for The Cookies as their Galway opponents turned on the style to complete an impressive comeback. Paulo Leleispuao notched two tries while Conor Philips scored another for Young Munster with Evan Cusack adding to their tally with a conversion and a penalty. The result leaves the side have in sixth place in the table.

In Division 2A, the second Limerick derby of the weekend between UL Bohemian and Old Crescent ended in the latter’s favour as they pipped Bohs to a 27-25 victory. Both teams were looking for their first victories of the campaign also but it was Crescent that would emerge victorious with tries from Kevin Doyle, Toita Tavita, Shane Mullally and Dean O’Grady.

In Division 2C, Bruff got their second win of the season with a convincing 43-12 victory at home to Ballina. Pa Maher, Kieran Bennett, Jack O’Grady, Shane Duggan, Dave Barrett and Warren Loulanting all scored tries for Bruff while Paul Collins kicked five conversions and a penalty in a clinical outing from the side.
