AIL Round-Up | Young Munster go top of 1A table as Garryowen fall short of Cork Con

Limerick’s Garryowen had their unbeaten streak ended by old rival Cork Constitution in Dooradoyle last Saturday seeing them lose their spot on top of the 1A table.

Dooradoyle was the host of the anticipated All Ireland League’s 1A clash between Garryowen and Cork Constitution on Saturday. Munster’s Jack Crowley spoiled the day for the light blues when he kicked a conversion off a late try from Cathal O’Flaherty which proved decisive.

The home side were hoping to extend their unbeaten run of four games, with tries from Munster out-half Ben Healy and winger Colm Quilligan. Healy showed his class by adding three penalties, a try and a conversion to the Garryowen scoreline, however it was his provincial colleague Crowley who added three penalties and converted a Dave Hyland try as the visitors took a 23-21 win.

In the other Munster derby Young Munster defeated UCC 19-9 at the Mardyke to remain the only unbeaten side in division 1A. Visitors Young Munster were always in the drivers seat, a try from Mark O’Mara and converted by Evan Cusack before adding added four penalties. Daniel Squires replied for the Cork students with three penalties.

There were gasps in the final minutes of Terenure’s win over Dublin University as Limerick native Caolan Dooley nailed a lengthy penalty just inside the Trinity half to seal the win for the visitors and finalise the 16-15 scoreline

Trinity made things difficult for Nure with break away tries from Louis O’Reilly and another Limerick native Ronan Quinn keeping the home side in the game. However, the calm and collected Terenure trusted the boot of Dooley to get them over the line.

In other fixtures across division 1A, Clontarf were a shadow of their former selves falling 13 points short of Lansdowne while UCD thumped visitors Ballynahinch in a clash which finished 42-17.
