A first draft fixture list for the Airtricity League First Division has been released this Friday evening which includes 11 teams ahead of the 2020 season.
With the news that Limerick FC could apply for a First Division licence, the fixture list had to be revised and the news has caused chaos and controversy in the past week.
The fixture list was released on the official SSE Airtricity League website on Friday afternoon and the organisation stated;
“The SSE Airtricity League have released a draft fixture list for the SSE Airtricity League 2020 season. The draft fixture list is in line with the dates previously advised and based on 11 teams competing in the League.
The National League Executive Committee has agreed the draft fixture list will consist of two rounds of League fixtures and maintains the play-off format.
It will be preceded by a First Division Shield Competition. As stated, the fixture list is in draft and based on all clubs being granted a licence to play so therefore, it is subject to change.”
The Airtricity League First Division doesnt officially begin until March 27th, a full month after the Premier Division. However, a First Division Shield competition will be run involving the clubs from the second tier which is split into two groups and begins on Friday, February 21st.
The National League Executive Committee have stressed that the fixture list is a draft. Limerick FC owner Pat O’Sullivan has yet to hear from Limerick United officials in relation to his offer of uniting both sides resources ahead of the new season and it is unlikely that Limerick FC would be offered a licence without the co-operation of Limerick United.
