Speaking after the game Barrett stressed that “any point is a good point,” but admitted that his side had chances to kill the game off in the first-half.
Treaty United’s winning start to the season came to a halt last Friday night, as they surrendered a two goal lead to play out a 2-2 draw with Bray Wanderers at the Markets Field.
Tommy Barrett’s side fall to second on the First Division table, with Cork City moving to top spot on goal difference following their 2-0 win over Longford Town.
Speaking after the game Barrett stressed that “any point is a good point,” but admitted that his side had chances to kill the game off in the first-half.
“Any point is a good point! We probably should have been three up, maybe 3-1 up at half-time. Willie was unlucky with the chance he kind of fell over his feet. If we went 3-0 at half-time I think the game is over. I think it was a very harsh penalty, the lads said they didn’t touch him, it looked that way. That changes the momentum of the game then, we probably stepped back too much, didn’t control the game enough, but they’re a good side.”
The Shannonsiders raced into an early lead courtesy of captain Mark Walsh, and the in-form Thomas Considine struck to send his side in 2-0 up at the interval.
However, a late Bray fightback meant that Treaty dropped points for the first time this season, having picked up victories over Cobh Ramblers, UCD and Kerry FC in the opening three weeks.
“We’re a new team, we have a lot of new players in, we’ve been tipped to finish 9th or 10th in this league! It still could happen, I’m not saying it will happen we’ll always try our best but it’s very important that we acknowledge that Bray are a very good side. We’re going to be under pressure against teams at times and we have to take a bit more control of the game, be calmer on the football and we have to try kill off the game.”
The visitors came alive in the final 20 minutes, and nearly took all three points but for a fine save from Treaty keeper Corey Chambers.
Any supporter of the Limerick side would have snapped your hand off if you offered them ten points from a possible twelve at the start of the season, and Barrett says his side “have to keep positive”.
“The last four weeks has gone well for us, that could easily change but we just have to keep positive all the time. The positives are scoring two goals against Bray, the negatives are conceding the two goals. The other positive is that we didn’t lose from a position where we could have lost, they had the momentum. The other positive is we’re ten points from four games!”
Barrett’s men are back in First Division action on Saturday, as they travel to Longford Town, who prop up the table following their winless start to the season.
