Treaty United manager Tommy Barrett was full of praise for the character shown by his side as they gave UCD a real scare in the second leg of the play-off on Sunday. With a three-goal deficit to claw back from the first leg, an early goal from Conor Melody followed by a second goal early in the second period from Anthony O’Donnell, gave real hope that the impossible task was achievable.
However, the straight red card handed out to Steven Christopher for a foul on Eoin Farrell just three minutes later, put a real dent in the visitors hopes. Adam Verdon pulled a goal back for UCD and although Treaty pushed and had chances through substitutes Matt McKevitt and Willie Armshaw but it wasn’t to be for the Limerick side as UCD ran out 4-2 aggregate winners and will now face Bray in the final of first division section following the Seagulls surprise 0-1 win over Galway.
Manager Tommy Barrett was full of praise for his side who exceeded pre-season expectations by a distance.
“We have a really good squad that I can choose and I have confidence in all of these boys. We have been unlucky with injuries all year as Conor Melody and Dean George have been missing for virtually the whole season. Tonight, we scored two very good goals and if that sending off doesn’t happen, I think we win the tie. I am very proud of the lads and they were excellent.”
