Blues outclass Lions in 22-16 win

Blues outclass Lions in 22-16 win.

A superb late try from Blues replacement fly-half Ihaia West consigned the British and Irish Lions to their first defeat of the New Zealand tour as Warren Gatland’s side went down 22-16 at Eden Park.

Despite trailing 12-10 at half-time and losing Liam Williams to a second-half yellow card, the Lions had hauled themselves back in front thanks to a gutsy forward effort and scrum dominance.

However, West latched on to a trademark offload from Sonny Bill Williams in the final five minutes to snatch a famous result for the Super Rugby franchise.

Ill discipline and penalties are also chief themes of Warren Gatland’s post-match interview.

However, he also praises the Lions’ set piece and says that the most important thing was improving, which his team definitely did. Gatland finishes by suggesting that the Super Rugby outfits will provide “brilliant preparation” for the Tests.
