BREAKING | Diarmaid Byrnes named 2022 Hurler of the Year

The Award will reside in Patrickswell for the third time in four years with the wing back the obvious choice after a stellar season.

Limerick superstar Diarmaid Byrnes has been named the 2022 PwC Hurler of the Year this evening at the All-Star awards.

The Patrickswell native beat out teammate Barry Nash and TJ Reid to the award as he added to the All-Star award he collected earlier in the evening.

Byrnes was phenomenal for Limerick at wing back as they won a third successive All-Ireland title, beating Kilkenny in a titanic tussle.

The wing-back broke the record for most points scored by a defender in a single season, clipping over 0-36 over seven games as he claims a first HOTY gong to go with a third successive All-Star.

Byrnes began the year in stellar fashion, hitting Cork for 0-6 in their opener, adding the same tally against Waterford a week later as he was named the Hurler of the Month for April.

His highest tally of the season came against Clare in the Munster championship where he accounted for 0-9 of his sides score in the Cusack Park draw.

In June he claimed a fourth successive Munster Senior Hurling Championship medal and a month later he claimed his fourth All-Ireland title.

Byrnes is just the third Limerick player to win the award, joining clubmate Cian Lynch (2018 & 2021) and Gearoid Hegarty (2020) in that regard.

He is one of Limerick players chosen on this year’s All-Star team with Kiely’s men once more dominating the selection.
