Byrnes nominated for Hurler of the Month after string of outstanding championship displays

The Patrickswell man has continued in the form of his All-Star years in 2020 and ’21.

Limerick’s Diarmaid Byrnes is one of three players nominated for the PwC GPA Hurler of the Month award for April.

Byrnes was a key figure in both of Limerick’s championship wins in April, as they defeated both Cork and Waterford to dispel any fears over their early season form.

The wing-back was named on the team of the week on both occasions as he continued in the vein that has seen him pick up successive All-Star awards to go with back-to-back All-Ireland titles.

Against Cork in Pairc Ui Chaoimh, Byrnes let his intentions known to the country hitting the hosts for 0-6 with half of those coming from play.

The following week, he matched that tally in an epic encounter against Waterford in the TUS Gaelic Grounds.

Byrnes has carried that form into May as he was also instrumental in the win over Tipperary while he picked off 0-9 against Clare in their drawn round robin game.

Donal Burke was in fine scoring fettle for Dublin in the first two rounds of the championship while Peter Duggan has settled back into the Clare jersey seamlessly after a couple of seasons away from the intercounty scene.
