Camogie Round Up: 5 in a row for Granagh Ballingarry, Junior title for Patrickswell and Na Piarsiagh advance in Munster

Granagh Ballingarry 0-17 (0-9) Ahane 0-9 (0-5)

Limerick Senior Camogie Final

Sunday 15th October 2017 at 2pm in Mungret

Granagh Ballingarry won an incredible fifth County Senior Camogie title in a row with a 0-17 to 0-9 win over Ahane in Mungret on Sunday. Granagh lead from early on and in truth were the better side throughout though it wasn’t until the final ten minutes that they opened up a decisive lead. Indeed were it not for an uncharacteristically high number of wides from the East Limerick side they may even have been leading going into the final minutes.

Kirsty Carroll and Mairéad Fitzgerald opened the scoring for Granagh with a brace and their interplay was to prove a thorn in the Ahane side throughout as they worked their way to a combined nine points from play.

Granagh were to build on this to a 0-7 to 0-2 lead as the match approached half-time but two further points from Niamh Mulcahy and one from Orla Curtin closed the gap to two. Ahane would have been happy to take this deficit into the break but Rebecca Noonan scored a brace just before the break to restore the champions lead to four.

Ahane centre-back Judith Mulcahy opened the scoring after the break but a brace from Mairead Fitzgerald and Kirsty Carroll opened the Granagh laead to five. This was to be Ahane’s best period of the game as they upped their intensity and battled for every ball. They again closed the gap to two with scores from Susie McGovern, Orla Curtin and Niamh Mulcahy but in truth their scores were proving more difficult to come by.

In the closing minutes Granagh extended their lead with six points from five different players, Fiona Hickey, Meadhbh Nash joining Kirsty Caroll, Mairéad Fitzgerald and Rebecca Noonan on the scoreboard as they secured their fifth title in as many years.

Captain Mairéad Fitzgerald accepted the trophy on behalf of her team mates. It should be noted that with this title Vera Sheehan has now accumulated an amazing eighteen Senior County titles. This is an amazing haul for any player and deserves wider recognition within the GAA community locally and nationally.

Granagh go forward to the Munster Senior semi-final where they will meet Tipperary’s Burgess Duharra.

Patrickswell 1-9 Ballybrown 0-9

Junior A Final

Sunday 15th October 2017 at 12pm in Mungret

An Ailis Byrnes goal 10 mins into 2nd half proved to be the difference as Patrickswell won the Junior A championship defeating near neighbours Ballybrown by 1-9 to 0-9 in a tightly contested match in Mungret on Sunday.

Ballybrown opened the scoring and went 3pts up without response from Patrickswell. Chelsea McCarthy opened the scoring for Patrickswell who kept in touch until the Byrnes goal put them ahead for the first time. Ballybrown were not beaten yet and pulled level as the game approached the end but Patrickswell were to score the last three points to restore their lead.

It was a great team performance from Patrickswell with both Orla Harty and Leah Van Veen very strong in defence. The victory will see Patrickswell return to Intermediate ranks in 2018.

Patrickswell will now return to the intermediate ranks for next year.

Patrickswell Scorers: Sarah Gillane 0-4 (4f), Ailis Byrnes 1-0, Ciara Barry 0-2, Leah Van Veen 0-1, Chelsea McCarthy 0-1, Shannon Gillane 0-1
