Limerick’s Castletroy College are bidding to bring silverware back to the Treaty, when they face Cork school, Hamilton High School, Bandon. The game is to be played in Kildorrery GAA grounds in North Cork, at 12.30pm this Tuesday, February 21st. This is a Munster B U19 Hurling final, with the winner advancing to the All-Ireland series next month.
This competition started in October, with Castletroy defeating fellow Limerick side John the Baptist, 3-22 to 2-11. Having returned to the second-tier in recent seasons, it’s clear the City school are continuing to push the game of hurling.
That opening round win was backed up with another 3-22 scoring-performance, this time against Blackwater College (Waterford), who hit 1-10 in reply. Despite a five-point reverse to Coachford in late November (1-12 to 0-10), the side, heavily backed by Monaleen players, advanced to the knockout stage from group three.
A quarter-final win over Colaiste Choilm Ballincollig (1-14 to 1-10) set up a last four clash against Tipperary opposition. This saw a 2-21 to 1-23 win over Highschool Clonmel, played on 21st January.
For Hamilton Highschool of Bandon, they arrive in equally impressive form. Wins over Rice College Ennis, Scoil Na Trionoide Doon and Coláiste an Spioráid Naomh Bishopstown helped them win group two.
Strong knockout wins over Carrick on Suir CBS and Charleville CBS sees them emerge to the final.
Coached by Liam Reale, Seán Herbert and Muiris Gilbourne, they’ll be hopeful the lengthy delay hasn’t hampered their quest for glory. A combination on mock examinations, mid-term break and other issues have meant that this is the final Munster decider to be determined.
There are five Limerick clubs on the panel, with Moanleen leading the way with 25. Ahane, Kildimo Pallaskenry, Na Piarsaigh and St. Patrick’s will also have an interest.
