Classy UL book Sigerson Cup final berth in style with dominant win over DCU

The Limerick college are just one hour from a maiden title after reaching a second successive decider this evening.

Goals from Ciaran Downes, Aaron Griffin and Eoghan MacLaughlin helped UL return to the Sigerson Cup final this evening as they continue their search for a first ever title.

After losing last year’s final, the University will have the chance to claim a first title next Wednesday in Waterford where they will face UCC after they bested TU Dublin on the same evening.

In their semi-final, UL dominated the favourites running out 3-12 to 0-12 winners in Carlow where the led for the final three quarters of an hour.

Yet, each of their goals came at an opportune time with DCU refusing to lie down.

But it was MacLaughlin’s effort with five to play that was the final nail in the coffin. That had it 3-11 to 0-12 with UL running out nine point winners.

Downes’ goal, the first of the evening came in the midst of a UL purple patch where they hit 1-4 without reply. The Kilmihil native intercepted a back pass from UL and stroked the ball into an empty DCU net, although it was far from an easy score.

He ended the half with 1-2 of UL’s tally as they took a six point lead into the interval after the sides had been level three times at 0-3 apiece. St Kieran’s’ John Hayes was on target with their second point.

DCU began their fight back immediately after the restart with Oisin Gallon kicking a wonderful pair of scores to reduce the gap to three.

But Griffin’s well taken goal had it back out to 2-8 to 0-8 with 43 minutes on the clock. Three in as many minutes from the Dublin side halved the deficit once more approaching the final ten minutes.

Yet, they would only muster one more score with Paul Walsh pointing on his introduction before MacLaughlin’s crucial goal. The Kerry man added the final pair of scores to ensure UL’s safe passage back to the final.

It will be a repeat of the first round clash in the final next Wednesday after UL were 2-7 to 0-10 winners in their clash in the Mardyk last month.
