Local Councillor Frankie Daly has pleaded with the local community in Limerick to support a campaign to save senior soccer in the city.
Yesterday, the footballing community was hit with a massive blow as it was announced Limerick FC’s holding company, Munster Football Club Limited, was on the verge of liquidation following an unsuccessful period in examinership.
Frankie Daly has been involved in Limerick junior soccer for the past two decades and was integral to the creation of Northside Football Club in the region.
He released a statement earlier today urging people to get behind last ditch effort.
Limerick FC Statement – Let’s Try and Save Senior Soccer in Limerick.I have supported Limerick FC since I was a youngster and remember tales my dad told me growing up of the great teams of 70s/80s.
We as a family and long time supporters of Limerick FC are sad to hear that there is likely to be no Senior Soccer Club playing in the league since 1937. We would like to offer support in any way that we can in order to ensure that a club can participate in LOI football next season .
Daly realised that time is running out and targeted local businesses to come together in a bid to save senior soccer in the city. Next season looks likely to be the first season since 1937 that Limerick City have failed to enter a senior soccer side in the national league.
There is a need for more local businesses to come together to try negotiate a possible good outcome for senior soccer in Limerick –
Deadline is tomorrow so I am trying to gather support too try save it. Please contact me if you have a desire to help save the club through a collaborative approach.
This will be a MAJOR blow to the soccer Community / and community in general -in Limerick and will be detrimental to the progression of young (kids with dreams) talent across Limerick and the Mid West Region. We as a community need to try and save Senior soccer.
On Thursday evening, Daly issued a further update, praising the response from many and saying that contact had been made with the Football Association of Ireland, who former owner Pat O’Sullivan was very critical of following yesterday’s ruling.
Great reaction on line to this campaign have made contact with FAI with the view to trying to resolve this situation. Limerick needs to have Senior Soccer – thanks to all those that have been in contact I will be in contact individually with everyone over the next 24 hours.
Think there is a chance if we can all come together on this. Keep an eye on this page for further updates.
